Abstract
The present study aimed to investigate the hypothesis that compartmentalization and differential importance would have a moderated moderation effect on the relationship between self-discrepancy and depression. For this purpose, the levels of self-discrepancy, compartmentalization, differential importance, depressive symptoms were measured for 457 adults aged 18 or older through an online survey. The hypothesis was tested by using hierarchical multiple regression analysis for moderated moderation analysis. Results indicated that the three-way interaction between self-discrepancy, compartmentalization and differential importance was significant. Specifically, depending on the level of discriminatory importance, the effect of self-discrepancy and compartmentalization on depression was different. If low level of differential importance(negatively organization), the interaction effect of self-discrepancy and compartmentalization on depression was not significant. On the contrary, the higher the level of differential importance(positively organization), the lower compartmentalized organization experienced relatively low levels of depression, even if they have a high discrepancy between the actual self and the ideal self. The results of the study expanded the understanding of depression by integrating the self-concept structure. And we also suggested that different therapeutic interventions are needed depending on the levels of self-discrepancy, compartmentalization, and differential importance. Finally, the significance and limitations of the study were discussed.
